What is ASTM A179 / ASME SA179?

ASTM A179 (the ASME boiler code equivalent is ASME SA179) is the standard specification for seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes used in heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer equipment. Published by ASTM International, the standard covers tubes with outer diameters from 1/8" (3.2 mm) to 3" (76.2 mm) and is referenced alongside ASTM A450/A450M for general carbon steel tube requirements.

The 'SA' prefix (ASME SA179) indicates the tube has been manufactured and tested to satisfy both ASTM and ASME boiler & pressure vessel code Section II requirements, making it acceptable for IBR-regulated applications in India and internationally.

Manufacturing Process: Cold Drawing

SA179 tubes manufactured by Solitaire Overseas are produced via the cold-drawing process — the same method specified in ASTM A179. Here's what that means for quality:

Billet Selection & Hot Rolling

Premium low-carbon steel billets are sourced from approved mills. The billet is hot-pierced and hot-rolled to form the "mother tube" — the starting seamless hollow.

Pickling & Surface Preparation

The mother tube is acid-pickled to remove mill scale and surface oxides, then lubricated with a drawing compound for smooth die passage.

Cold Drawing

The tube is drawn through a precision die and internal mandrel at room temperature, reducing OD and WT simultaneously to achieve tight tolerances (OD ±0.1 mm, WT ±10%) and improved surface finish.

Annealing

Cold-worked tubes are heat treated at controlled temperatures to restore ductility and meet the ≥35% elongation requirement specified in ASTM A179.

Testing & Inspection

Each tube is hydrostatic tested (or NDE), dimensionally inspected, and certified before dispatch. MTR issued per EN 10204/3.1b.

Frequently Asked Questions - SA179 Carbon Steel Tube

ASTM A179 is the material specification published by ASTM International. ASME SA179 is the identical specification adopted by ASME into its Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Section II, Part A). Chemical composition and mechanical requirements are identical. The ASME designation is specified when tubes are used in pressure vessels or boilers under ASME BPVC or IBR code jurisdiction in India.

The minimum yield strength of ASME SA179 (ASTM A179) tubes is 26 KSI (180 MPa). The minimum tensile strength is 47 KSI (325 MPa), with a minimum elongation of 35% in 2 inches (50 mm).

Standard SA179 tubes are available in ODs from 6.35 mm (¼") to 63.5 mm (2½"), wall thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 10 mm, and lengths from 3,000 mm to 16,000 mm. Solitaire Overseas also supplies custom sizes and cut-to-length pieces per drawing requirements.

ASTM A179 material contains 0.06% to 0.18% carbon. This low carbon content is intentional; it maximises thermal conductivity, formability, and resistance to hydrogen embrittlement, making the grade ideal for heat exchanger tube fabrication.

ASME SA179 tubes are seamless cold-drawn. ASME SA178 tubes are manufactured by electric resistance welding (ERW). SA179 is preferred where weld-free integrity is essential (high-pressure, high-temperature, or cyclic service). SA178 is lower cost and suitable for lower-pressure boiler applications.

SA179 targets heat exchangers and condensers: lower carbon (0.06–0.18%), lower tensile strength (325 MPa), higher elongation. SA210 A1 is for boilers and superheaters: higher carbon (up to 0.27%), higher tensile (415 MPa), higher yield (255 MPa). Choose SA210 A1 for high-pressure boiler applications, SA179 for heat exchange duty.

Each SA179 tube undergoes hydrostatic testing (or NDE substitute), hardness test, flattening test, flaring test, tensile and yield strength test, chemical analysis / PMI, and dimensional inspection. Optional tests include ultrasonic testing, eddy current, radiography, and NABL-approved independent lab reports.

SA179 tubes are designed for heat exchanger and condenser service, not ultra-high-pressure applications. For high-pressure boiler tubes, ASME SA210 Grade A1 or alloy grades (SA213 T11, T22) are more appropriate. That said, SA179 is routinely used in heat exchangers at 10–100 bar in refinery and power plant service.
